The son of a primary school teacher, Bhalla pursued his education at Punjab Agricultural University, earning a Ph.D. from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. Despite his academic achievements, his passion for comedy never wavered. In 1975, he and two schoolmates were selected for All India Radio, marking the beginning of a lifelong affair with comedy.
Bhalla’s professional career took off in 1988 with the audio cassette Chhankata 1988, featuring co-performer and classmate, Bal Mukund Sharma. This successful partnership spawned 27 audio and video albums of the Chankata series, which have entertained Punjabi audiences for decades. Neelu Sharma has also been an integral part of the series.
In Chhankata, Bhalla dons multiple avatars, showcasing his versatility as a performer. He is best known for his portrayal of Chacha Chatur Singh, a character that humorously highlights the disparity between rural and urban life, and discusses Punjab’s politics.
