Canada Ends Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express Programs for Faster Study Permit Processing

In a recent update, Canada has announced the end of its Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) initiatives, effective as of 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024. The SDS, launched in 2018, was designed to expedite study permit processing for eligible post-secondary students in certain countries, including India, China, Pakistan, and the Philippines, among others. Similarly, NSE was tailored to provide Nigerian students with a streamlined pathway for study permits. These initiatives have played a vital role in supporting students from these countries by offering faster processing times and easier access to Canadian education.

The decision to conclude the SDS and NSE initiatives reflects Canada’s commitment to strengthening program integrity and ensuring a fair, accessible study permit process for all international students. By transitioning back to the regular study permit stream, Canada aims to address vulnerabilities and provide equal opportunities for students worldwide. This change seeks to enhance fairness, allowing all applicants, regardless of nationality, a streamlined experience with the same standards and expectations, which includes financial proof through Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs).
