In a groundbreaking move towards modernizing train services, Indian Railways has launched the country’s first-ever ATM facility onboard a train, marking a new chapter in passenger convenience and innovation. The facility was installed as part of a trial run on the 12110 Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express in Maharashtra.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the onboard ATM on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, showcasing the unique setup that has taken many passengers and netizens by surprise.
ATM on Wheels: A New Revenue Frontier
Dubbed “ATM on Wheels”, the initiative is in line with the Railway Board’s vision to enhance non-fare revenue through creative and value-added services. The idea was formally proposed during a vendor consultation meeting held on March 25, 2025, where stakeholders were invited to brainstorm on alternate income streams for Indian Railways.
Following the discussion, the Railways retrofitted a mini-pantry section on the Panchvati Express to accommodate the ATM. The installation was securely mounted with vibration isolation technology, including rubber pads and bolts to ensure stability during movement. For added safety, two fire extinguishers were installed in the compartment.
A Step Toward Viksit Bharat 2047
Officials noted that this innovative experiment is a small yet significant stride in the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047”, aimed at transforming the country’s railway infrastructure into a world-class system. “Indian Railways continues its journey of innovation and modernization, and the ATM on train is one such step towards redefining travel convenience,” a senior railway official said.
