Massive Turnout in Chandigarh as Youth Respond to Call for Civil Defence Volunteers

In a striking show of enthusiasm and civic responsibility, thousands of young citizens turned up in Chandigarh on Saturday after the city administration issued a call inviting youth to join as Civil Defence Volunteers. The overwhelming response marks a strong start to the city’s push to build a culture of emergency preparedness and community resilience.

Visuals shared by news agency ANI on social media showed a massive crowd gathered at the Tagore Theatre, where the first batch of civil defence enrolment and training was launched.

In an official post on X, the Chandigarh Administration wrote, “The Civil Defence Enrollment and Training Camp for the first batch has commenced at Tagore Theatre. All remaining volunteers are kindly requested to report at Tiranga Park, Sector 17, within the next 30 minutes. Your timely participation is crucial for a well-coordinated training session.”

The response comes after the Deputy Commissioner of UT Chandigarh issued an appeal on Friday, calling upon the city’s youth — especially those aged 18 and above — to register as Civil Defence Volunteers and assist the administration in disaster management and emergency response efforts.

“Serve the Nation. Be Prepared. Chandigarh Administration invites young citizens who are above 18 years age, to join as Civil Defence Volunteers and support emergency preparedness,” the administration had posted on X.

Officials described the turnout as “beyond expectations” and a testament to the growing sense of civic duty among Chandigarh’s young population. The administration is now planning to hold additional training camps to accommodate the large number of volunteers who came forward.

This initiative aims to strengthen the region’s capacity to respond to emergencies such as natural disasters, health crises, and civil disturbances by equipping local youth with the skills needed to serve during critical situations.
