Former Indian cricketer and current politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is expected to be released from Patiala jail on Saturday after completing his one-year rigorous imprisonment sentence imposed by the Supreme Court in a 1988 road rage case. Sidhu’s official Twitter handle confirmed the news, stating that concerned authorities have given the green light for his release.
The 1988 road rage incident resulted in the death of Gurnam Singh. Sidhu was initially acquitted by a lower court, but the Punjab and Haryana High Court reversed the verdict and convicted him of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, sentencing him to three years in prison. The Supreme Court later commuted the sentence to one-year imprisonment.
Sidhu, who is a member of the Indian National Congress and a former Member of Parliament, has been in jail since December 2018. His release is expected to generate a lot of attention and media coverage.
