Even as the threat of drunk driving continues to loom large on city roads, only a fraction of offenders have faced actual license suspensions, as per the official data released by the Chandigarh Traffic Police. From 2023 until mid-March 2025, only 10.8 percent of drunk-driving violators had their cases recommended for suspension of their driving licenses.
High Challans, Low Suspension
Between January 2023 and March 13, 2025, the traffic police have issued a total of 7,941 challans for driving under the influence of liquor. However, just 534 of these cases were forwarded to the court with a recommendation for license suspension.
- 2023: Out of 3,160 challans, 2,520 were disposed of, but only 323 license suspensions were recommended (12.8%).
- 2024: The number of challans was 3,561, yet license suspension recommendations fell to 207 (9.1%).
- 2025 (till March 13): 1,220 challans were issued and 120 disposed of, with only 4 licenses proposed for suspension, shockingly a low rate of 3.3 percent.
