In a significant move to provide relief to farmers and families impacted by the recent floods, the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has announced a series of key decisions aimed at ensuring financial assistance, livelihood restoration, and long-term stability for the agrarian community.
“Jiska Khet, Uski Rait” Scheme
The government has introduced a new policy under which farmers will now be allowed to remove and sell sand from their own fields. Popularly referred to as the “Jiska Khet, Uski Rait” scheme, this initiative is expected to not only empower farmers but also reduce illegal sand mining by creating a structured and transparent framework.
Compensation for Crop Losses
Recognizing the heavy toll floods have taken on agriculture, the Cabinet has approved a ₹20,000 per acre compensation for farmers whose crops were damaged. This measure is intended to ease the immediate financial burden and help them prepare for the next sowing season.
Support for Families of Deceased
For families that have lost loved ones during the floods, the state has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh. This decision acknowledges the deep human tragedy caused by the calamity and aims to extend much-needed support to bereaved families.
Loan Relief for Farmers
To further aid recovery, the Cabinet has also approved a six-month relief period on farm loan EMIs and interest payments. This step will give farmers critical breathing space to stabilize their finances without the immediate pressure of repayments.
