A meeting of the Transport Sub-Committee of the Administrative Advisory Council was held on Wednesday at the UT Guest House in Sector-6. It was presided over by MP Kirron Kher. Suggestions for levying congestion tax on outstation vehicles (which are not registered in the city) were discussed in the meeting to decongest the city traffic as well as promote the use of public transport in the city.The sub-committee also directed to control the autorickshaws coming from Punjab and Panchkula. There are about 6,000 autorickshaws registered with the STA in Chandigarh. Apart from this, on the basis of an agreement, 500-500 autos from Panchkula and Mohali were allowed to run in Chandigarh. The subcommittee has suggested that Mohali and Panchkula should ensure that more than their designated autorickshaws do not come into the city. They should also share the details of their 500 autorickshaws with the State Transport Authority so that the department can take action against other autorickshaws.It was informed in the meeting that STA is now giving permits to only electric autos in Chandigarh. Officials of RITES Limited were also present in the meeting. Told that in the next one week, he will submit his study report of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Chandigarh Urban Complex.
After that work will be started on the plan of Mass Rapid Transit System for the tricity. In the meeting, MP Kirron Kher was told that 40 electric buses are running in the city and another 40 buses will reach Chandigarh in July. The President of the Chandigarh Transport Association suggested that a paid parking yard may be provided at Hallomajra in the open space available on the road (from Poultry Farm Chowk to Ram Darbar) for medium and heavy commercial vehicles. The entry of heavy commercial vehicles into the city is restricted from 6 am to 11 pm, so that the drivers of these vehicles should not be disturbed. Apart from this, it was informed that there are 87 paid parking spots in the city. RFP has been floated to improve the parking management of existing paid parking.
The fee will be calculated according to the duration of the vehicle parked in the parking area.
