Former Indian wrestling star and current MLA Vinesh Phogat, who missed out on the Gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 but still made the entire country proud, has announced her ambitious plan to build a world-class sports academy for young athletes using the Rs 4 crore cash prize awarded to her by the Haryana government.
Vinesh Phogat received the reward under the state’s sports policy, which offered Olympic medal-winning athletes the choice between a cash prize, land, or a government job. Despite being disqualified from the women’s 50kg category due to a marginal weight issue at the Paris Olympics 2025 qualifiers, she was awarded the prize money equivalent to that of a silver medalist.
Sharing the news via her official social media handle, Phogat stated: “When a player’s hard work is recognised, that is the real victory. The public has given me love, trust, and encouragement. Now is the time to repay that. This prize is not just a reward—it’s a tool to fulfil a long-held dream.”
She emphasized her commitment to future athletes, explaining that the academy will provide top-tier training, resources, and a safe environment, ensuring young talent receives the respect and inspiration they deserve. It is pertinent to mention that Vinesh Phogat retired from professional wrestling shortly after her disqualification and transitioned into politics. She is now serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Julana, representing the Congress party.
