Water Dispute Intensifies: Punjab Moves High Court Against BBMB, Alleges Misleading Conduct

The Punjab Government has taken fresh legal action in the high-stakes water-sharing conflict by filing a review petition in the High Court against the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The petition challenges the High Court’s May 6 order, which allowed BBMB to continue with its current water release protocols from the Nangal Dam.

In its strongly worded plea, the state government has accused BBMB of not only violating established legal and procedural frameworks but also of providing misleading information to the court during earlier proceedings.

The latest development adds fuel to the ongoing protest led by Education Minister Harjot Bains, who, along with AAP volunteers, continues to stage a dharna at the dam site, demanding the immediate suspension of BBMB’s water release activities until proper consultations are held.

“BBMB’s unilateral actions are not just legally questionable but also undermine Punjab’s rightful claim to its water resources,” said a state government spokesperson.

Officials reiterated that the state is determined to fight both legally and politically to ensure equitable and lawful management of river water, which remains a sensitive and vital issue for Punjab’s agrarian economy.

The High Court is expected to take up the review petition in the coming days, with legal experts watching closely as the case could set a precedent in inter-state water management.
