A Leap Underwater: PM Modi Inaugurates India’s First Underwater Metro Route in Kolkata

In a landmark event for India’s infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first underwater metro route in Kolkata.This significant project, part of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, connects Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.The underwater section of the tunnel, stretching 520 meters under the Hooghly River, is a testament to India’s engineering prowess.

The 4.8 km stretch of the East-West metro has been constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore.It features the deepest metro station in India at Howrah, located 30 meters below the ground.This metro service will connect Howrah and Salt Lake, the twin cities of West Bengal’s state capital.The metro route includes three underground stations and is expected to traverse the 520-meter stretch under the Hooghly river in just 45 seconds.

The inauguration of this underwater metro route marks a significant stride towards enhancing connectivity and public transportation in the region.As the nation celebrates this achievement, the underwater metro route stands as a symbol of India’s commitment to infrastructure development and technological advancement.
