The directive, which also extends to Union Territories, stipulates that these breeds, which are already kept as pets, should be sterilized to prevent further breeding. This move is a response to the serious issue of human deaths due to dog bites by some ferocious breeds of dogs kept as pets. The government has received representations from citizens, citizen forums, and Animal Welfare Organisations (AWOs) to ban some of the breeds of dogs from keeping them as pets and other purposes.
